House Bill No. 731 calls for the establishment of a National Anti-Obesity Prevention and Control Program that will control and prevent obesity in the country. Proponent Rep. Rodel Batocabe said he is alarmed by the growing number of obesity cases among Filipinos.
Citing figures from the Food and Nutrition Research of the Department of Science and Technology, Batocabe said 37,000 of the deaths in the country in 2008 were caused by obesity.
In a statement, Ako Bicol said the relative risk associated with obesity was found to be more than twice the risk of getting coronary artery disease and almost thrice the risk of getting cardiovascular diseases.
Lawmakers from the partylist group Ako Bicol yesterday pushed the inclusion of the “marginalized, oppressed and powerless (MOP)” sector in the newly crafted anti-bullying bill that has been approved by Congress.
Ako Bicol partylist Reps. Christopher Co and Rodel Batocabe said that verbal abuse against women, religious minorities, as well as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and indigenous peoples who are considered “MOP,” should be considered a criminal offense with a penalty of imprisonment.
Batocabe pointed out that the MOP sector is still subject to physical and verbal abuses in many instances.
“These abuses are committed by those who are close-minded and discriminate against them. No one has yet been prosecuted for these constitutionally offensive acts,” he said.
